What is an Alignment Chart?

An Alignment Chart is a categorization tool originally derived from the tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). It uses two axes to define a character's moral and ethical perspective:

  • Ethical Axis (Horizontal): Lawful, Neutral, or Chaotic. It represents one's relationship with order, rules, and society.
  • Moral Axis (Vertical): Good, Neutral, or Evil. It represents one's intentions and treatment of others.

Together, these axes create a 3x3 grid with 9 distinct alignments, ranging from "Lawful Good" to "Chaotic Evil." Today, these charts are widely used as internet memes to categorize everything from food and software to movie characters.
